Alaskan Vacation - 2016

2016 - Alaska Vacation Take a look at some of the photos I took on our trip.  Just click the above link. We had a great time - the weather cooperated and we were able to do a lot of different things.  Cruising is certainly a great way to vacation.   We traveled with Sue and Gerry Olson which added to the fun. We spent a couple of days in Vancouver, British Columbia prior to leaving on our cruise.  We spent one day touring the city, using a hop on hop off bus system to get around.  The second day we went up to Whistler, the site of the Olympic ski village.   The day was sunny and warm and the views were great. We cruised out of Vancouver on Friday afternoon in clear weather, explored the ship, enjoyed a drink and then dinner in the main dining room.  Listening to a little music, watched a musical review show and wandering around the ship completed the day.  We cruised all day Saturday and docked in Ketchikan on Sunday morning.  W...

January Fun!

A Little January Fun The best way to spend a week in January is not in the Chicago area. We took a 10 day trip south driving to Destin, FL and New Orleans, LA. We drove through Birmingham and Montgomery, AL on the way and  stopped at some of the civil rights memorials. One of the most meaningful one was the National Memorial for Peace and Justice which highlights the many lynchings (4400) that took place in this country between the years of 1877 and 1950. We spent 2 1/2 days in Destin, enjoying walking on the beach and using the pool at the resort as well as trying different restaurants. Drove to New Orleans, stopping in Biloxi, MS to visit the last home of Jefferson Davis. Activities in New Orleans included exploring the French Quarter, taking a 2 hour cruise on the Natchez steam boat, and sipping coffee and eating beignets at Cafe Du Mond.   The next day we visited a few plantations along Plantation Row - the Whitney Planta...

Vacation - another marker!

Paul and I flew out to Boston a couple of weeks ago, took the bus to Cape Cod and spent a week plus a few days with my mother - both on the Cape and at Chautauqua Institution on Lake Chautauqua, New York.  We drove with Mom to Chautauqua and stayed with her cousin, Miriam on the grounds of the institution.  The theme for the week was Immigration - and there were several very interesting speakers on the subject.  We also saw the opera, MacBeth, heard the Chautauqua symphony and listened to the lively music of Pink Martini.  It was a very interesting week.  Chautauqua is kind of like a gated community - it took a little getting used to having to show passes to get in and off the grounds.  Also, Miriam does not lock her condo, so leaving the door shut but not locked took a little getting used to.  Being a community with few cars though made it a wonderful place to walk and Paul and I did a lot of that.  Paul and I had the added bonus of having friend...
